Folly of the Day

A Security Guard at Bangkok's Wat Pho Temple Climbed the Wall, Wrapped a Cloth Around His Head, Apologized to the Temple's Sacred Spirits, and Recited a Concealment Spell He Believed Would Make Him Unseen — Then Stole 2,000 Baht From the Donation Box. The CCTV He Was Employed to Watch Recorded Him Before, During, and After.

Ratchathan, a security guard professionally familiar with how cameras work, elected to defeat them not by avoiding them but by reciting a spell of invisibility — and the temple's CCTV, declining to recognize the incantation, recorded all 2,000 baht of the theft in continuous color.

Barrowcliffe held a Criminal Behaviour Order naming the exact shops he was forbidden to enter, treated it as a list of suggestions, and converted a packet of pretzel bites into the final exhibit that sent him to prison for a year.

The Wire

A Nottingham Man Was Convicted of Burglary for the Fourth Time After Climbing Through a Window Bare-Handed and Leaving His Fingerprint on the Windowsill. He Was Jailed for Roughly Two and a Half Years.

Fearon, by his fourth burglary conviction, had received ample instruction in how burglars are identified, and chose to enter through a window bare-handed — depositing on the point of entry the one piece of evidence the justice system had already used to convict him three times.

The Villages

A Man Wanted on a Warrant for Violating a Domestic-Violence Injunction Parked Himself at the City Fire Outdoor Bar at Brownwood Paddock Square. An Anonymous Tipster Phoned It In. He Was Held Without Bond.

Rayborn, wanted on a warrant tied to a domestic-violence injunction, selected as his place to be conspicuously at leisure the most prominent outdoor bar in The Villages — a community whose residents regard the reporting of a suspicious stranger as a civic hobby — and was identified before he finished his drink.
